BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Oct. 14, 2014 - PRLog -- Bethlehem, PA -- In recognition of the 20th anniversary of the end of apartheid, Bakithi Kumalo will present an evening of traditional and contemporary music from South Africa. Kumalo is Paul Simon’s iconic bass player from the Graceland record and has toured with him ever since. A Grammy winner, composer, and vocalist, Bakithi has also worked with Gloria Estefan, Josh Groban, Herbie Hancock, Harry Belafonte, Miriam Makeba, Grover Washington Jr., Laurie Anderson, Angelique Kidjo, Hugh Masekela, Chaka Khan, Mickey Hart, Joan Baez, and Cyndi Lauper, among others. On Saturday, November 1st, Kumalo will be joined by the super group of South African and American musicians called FOUR PEACE. On the heels of a performance at Carnegie Hall in October and before an upcoming tour with Paul Simon, this is a rare opportunity to see Bakithi Kumalo up close and personal at the legendary Godfrey Daniels listening room, right in the heart of Bethlehem, where the Kumalo’s currently reside.

Originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, Bakithi Kumalo is considered one of the most talented living bassists in the world today. His performance on Paul Simon’s Graceland album and specifically “You Can Call Me Al” stands alone as being among the most recognizable bass parts of all time. Bakithi is excited to bring his band to Godfrey Daniels, saying “People mostly know me as Paul Simon’s bass player and now I also want to share my music and the culture of South Africa with everyone, along with celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela and the 20th anniversary of freedom. I’m honored to be a part of this community and perform in such an historic place as Godfrey Daniels.”

The evening will be intimate and interactive; in addition to the music, the musicians will talk about South Africa, including living in the time of apartheid, as well as hearing stories about working with Paul Simon. The audience may hear “You Can Call Me Al” and “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes”, and have the chance to ask questions, plus meet and greet the musicians after the show. Joining Kumalo are the members of the FOUR PEACE band. From Capetown, South Africa, Morris Goldberg also played on Graceland and was touring with Harry Belafonte when he met Kumalo. Songwriter/composer David Bravo was born and raised in Capetown, and has worked with Harry Belafonte, Jack Bruce (Cream), Debbie Harry, and Bo Diddley to name a few. Drummer Maciek Schejbal is from Poland and spent 10 years in South Africa, expanding his musical interests and bringing his talents back to the states as a teacher at the world-renowned Drummers Collective in New York City and performing with various jazz and African artists including James Hurt, Tony Cedras, and Hugh Masekela.

In addition, there will be a special masterclass workshop at 4:00 pm; an unprecedented opportunity for musicians and others to participate and learn from the best. Space is limited and all workshop participants will be eligible to win a “U-Bass” from KALA Music, the company that makes the Bakithi Kumalo signature model.

Special guest of the evening is Robbi K, wife of Bakithi Kumalo. A premier artist in her own right, Robbi has a long career singing with many legendary artists including Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Jewel, Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, Mary J. Blige, and Harry Belafonte. For 30 years she’s toured as an arts educator, jazz songstress/songwriter, and sings in several languages, including Spanish, French, German, Zulu, and Italian.

Godfrey Daniels is a BYOB establishment, located at 7 E. 4th Street in Bethlehem, PA.
