Expedition team to explore threatened Arunachal Pradesh

On 25 October 2014, an expedition team sets off to explore the remote corners of Arunachal Pradesh in the Indian Himalayas – an area threatened by proposed dams, rail links and deforestation.

BRISTOL, U.K. - Oct. 14, 2014 - PRLog -- In a region known as the Mountains of the Rising Sun – it’s the first place in India to be touched by sunlight every morning – the Secret Compass expedition team will pioneer a trekking route over an unclimbed 5,000m pass to link the remote Ghalum and Sat Ti valleys.

Kerry O’Neill from Secret Compass said, “The need for permits to visit this restricted area has made this one of the most remote and wild Himalayan regions.

“Our tenacious team members need an Indian visa, a Protected Area Permit and an Inner Line Permit just to enter – which puts many travellers off. Remote, wild and uncrowded, Arunachal Pradesh is the perfect Secret Compass adventure travel destination.”

Arunachal Pradesh, Mountains of the Rising Sun: Expedition highlights

•  Cross an unnamed, unclimbed 5000m mountain pass
•   Visit a rarely visited, highly restricted Himalayan region
•   Travel in the company of local tribal people who still live off the land
•   Look out for endangered wildlife including leopards, red pandas and  Himalayan bears

Yet as Arunachal Pradesh rises to the travel world’s attention, so do the factors threatening its pristine wilderness and beauty.

A train link with New Delhi is facing opposition from local people, the Indian government plans to build over 200 dams in this Himalayan region, and deforestation to plant bio-diesel crop are all imminent threats.

Tom Bodkin, Secret Compass’s founder, said, “As an adventure travel company we always seek to achieve the extraordinary. Almost inaccessible Arunachal Pradesh has a fascinating linguistic and tribal heritage, which we’ll be among the few outsiders to witness.

“We hope our aim to forge a link between two previously unlinked valley systems is successful, and that we can help a small group of conscientious adventure travellers experience this culturally rich Himalayan region before modernisation changes it forever.”

It’s only recently that India has begun granting visitor permits for Arunachal Pradesh and a large proportion of the region remains unexplored, even by the 100-plus local tribes.

If successful, the team will make Himalayan exploration history and may be among the last outsiders to see Arunachal Pradesh in its current pristine state.

The collective writings and photographs captured by the team will serve as an enduring snap shot of this region at a pivotal point in its history.

Secret Compass’s 2015 expedition destinations include Panama, Iraqi Kurdistan, Madagascar, Kamchatka, Sinai, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia and are open to anyone with an active lifestyle and a sense of adventure.
