Health Alert: Doctor Explains How To Renew The Body And Stay Young With Food

Research proves diet can make a significant difference in how fast people age. Doctor explains how eating the right foods can help people look and feel younger.

And it doesn’t matter if someone is 20 or 80, the average human liver is no more than 2 years old.

“You may not think you’re a teenager,” explains Dr. Mark Drucker, MD, Medical Director at the Center For Advanced Medicine. “But a good portion of your body is really only 15 years old or less! Although you may have been counting your birthdays diligently, your body isn’t sticking to the same schedule. We tend to think of our whole body aging right along with us. But research shows that all the cells in our body - even our brain and heart cells - renew themselves to some extent over the course of our lifetime.”

The body has an internal repair mechanism that is constantly working to renew the body. And while it will do this to some extent on its own, there are some tactics people can apply to make this work even better.

First of all, eat less. Scientists have discovered that eating very little helps slow down aging dramatically and boosts immune health. A ketogenic diet, as this is kind of diet is called, spurs the body to produce special molecules called ketones that in moderate amounts helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

Restricting diet to achieve this effect is not for everybody. It takes tremendous discipline. But even without going to this extreme, there are options . . . people can simply eat less.

Some of the longest living people in the world, the Okinawans, maintain a custom around eating called hara hachi bu. They only eat to 80% fullness. Other research shows that eating a big lunch and very little for breakfast or dinner can also help improve health. This is the traditional way of eating in the Mediterranean.

Simply put, eating less takes a load off the body.

But there are also foods that when added selectively to diet help prevent aging further.

“You’ve probably heard of the value of having antioxidants like vitamin A in your diet,” notes Dr. Drucker. “These special molecules neutralize damaging free radicals. For years, health experts have argued free radicals cause aging. Now we’re learning how they do this more specifically. New research demonstrates that free radicals seem to cause particular damage when it comes to your cells’ power plants, the mitochondria.”

Mitochondria are right at ground zero when it comes to free radical exposure. As the cells’ power plants, they are at the center of oxidation, where fuel is turned into energy. During the course of this normal metabolic process, lots of free radicals are produced.

When cells’ mitochondria are damaged, cells can’t perform well. They can’t take care of their specialized tasks. Nor can they reproduce properly in order to build healthy new cells and tissues. When the mitochondria are damaged, the whole body suffers.

According to preliminary research, mitochondrial damage seems bring on muscle mass loss, grey hair and even heart disease. Damaged mitochondria have been linked to cancer, muscular dystrophy and Alzheimer’s disease.

Diet is key to helping mitochondria fend off this onslaught. The more antioxidant-rich foods in the diet, the more the body can absorb and neutralize the free radicals created in the mitochondria.

Finally, to help cells renew themselves more easily, a good supply of protein and nucleic acids is critical. The body uses protein to construct any new tissue as well as the enzymes needed for proper cellular function. Nucleic acids are used to build new DNA. Without this critical ingredient, the cells cannot reproduce properly.
