ARLINGTON, Va. - Oct. 13, 2014 - PRLog -- “Peace through Strength” and “Walk Softly and Carry A Big Stick” are reminders from former Presidents who recognized their need for a strong national defense.

What I see today is a world falling apart. ISIS has survived apparently unharmed by our aerial bombings. Their flags still fly and recruits are leaving western shores to join them. Iran is on the move and renegotiating their nuclear treaties; there is trouble on the Turkish border; India and Pakistan are fighting; Hong Kong is protesting the Chinese government; and, on it goes.

America is war weary. We’ve been fighting for well over a decade and want our soldiers out of harm’s way. We are all asking, “Is this our fight?” Unfortunately, when we left Iraq, a vacuum was created that was filled with the most organized and evil terrorist group the world has seen in a long time. Beheadings, mass killings, forced conversions, forced marriages, and sexual jihad are their norm.

Will we fight them for humanitarian reasons? Will we fight them to continue the quest for freedom and liberty? Or, will we fight them to stop their evil from spreading? They have promised to come to US shores and try to kill us. We will not let them! This force can be stopped, and we will probably have to go back to the Middle-East to stop them.

So today, the world is influencing us - we are not influencing the world. And, there is a serious vacuum of leadership. We must maintain a strong national defense to protect our way of life. We must maintain technological superiority. We must keep the upper hand to protect our citizens. And, we must have plans, policies and strategies that make sense. America is tired of prolonged struggles. We are tired of giving lives, sweat and blood for other nations and peoples. Only to then leave and have the country turn away from the freedom and liberty we fought so hard for.

The current budget, which was drawn before the ISIS fighters began their invasions last spring, and the overseas contingency operations request must be passed by Congress to support our committed effort.

The current funding cuts have hurt America’s Armed Forces, and we are not positioned to prevent terrorists’ attacks as we were just a few years ago.

To keep Americans safe and maintain our global leadership, I will continue to support Congress and the President working in concert to develop a long-term national security strategy.

Further, I pledge to support any and every effort necessary to see that the young men and women serving our nation, including veterans of all conflicts, receive the care they deserve and are entitled to, with emphasis on a well-organized and professional Department of Veterans Affairs.
