October 11 has been declared by The United Nations General Assembly as the international day to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. The documentary film by first-time feature length documentary filmmaker, Atin Mehra, Bulbul: Song of the Nightingale, brings voice to girls and women of the Banchara Tribe (formally recognized as a Scheduled Caste) in Madhya Pradesh, India. Young Banchara girls face incredible challenges in their lives as they are born into the longstanding community tradition of caste-based prostitution.

The theme for this year's International Day of the Girl Child is "Empowering Adolescent Girls: Ending the Cycle of Violence".  "Twelve-year old Bulbul, the main character of our film, along with other women of her community, put their own lives at risk to tell this story. This is why on this day, October 11th, we honor them, and ask the world to join this cause.", says director Atin Mehra, and founder of Orange Kite Productions.

"By telling Bulbul’s story, we aim to attract resources both human and financial towards creating sustainable alternatives for this community," explained film producer, Huriyyah Muhammad. The film is using the hashtag #flybulbulfly to promote the importance of encouraging young girls to pursue their dreams.

Don't be surprised if your phone rings on October 11th, as the team encourages remembrance of this significant day, and offers the opportunity for everyone to get involved. "By providing girls and women with access to education, by ensuring their sexual and reproductive health and rights, as well as engaging men and boys in the promotion of gender equality, we can protect and empower girls." - UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.
