SALT LAKE CITY - Oct. 9, 2014 - PRLog -- A new, international scientific nonprofit organization has incorporated in the state of Utah under the name Pan-American Vocology Association (PAVA) to advance the scientific study of the voice.

Lynn Helding, associate professor of voice at Dickinson College, currently acts as chief organizational officer of PAVA. “The impulse to ‘give voice’ is a shared one, across species,” she explained. “PAVA will provide education and training opportunities for voice professionals through biennial symposia, online courses and video conferencing led by distinguished mentors. We’re especially excited about the enormous potential in digital media that will allow members across the Western Hemisphere to connect and share ideas about voice.”

PAVA stems from a relatively new field, vocology, which unites researchers, clinicians, and professional voice users such as singers and actors, to study vocal activity. According to Dr. Ingo Titze, executive director of the National Center of Voice and Speech (NCVS) and co-inventor of the term vocology, “Clinicians and researchers must go beyond simply repairing a voice, or bringing it back to a normal state. We must look at habilitation, or the process of building and strengthening the voice to meet specific communication goals.” The need for a professional vocology association was initiated by the attendees of a national symposium, “Specialty Training in Vocal Health,” held at NCVS in April 2013. Eric Hunter, symposium organizer and a professor at Michigan State University, explained, “As I closed the meeting and gave final remarks, I was surprised by the groundswell of support for this type of group.”

The inaugural symposium of the Pan-American Vocology Association is scheduled for October 2015 at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. In addition to research presentations and lectures, elections will occur at this symposium for a new slate of PAVA officers and Board of Directors that is representative of North, South and Central America.

In addition to Helding, Titze and Hunter, the current board of directors of PAVA includes Linda Carroll, Director of the Graduate Program in Speech-Language Pathology at Yeshiva University, Starr Cookman, Voice/Speech Pathologist, Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Connecticut Voice and Speech Clinic, James Daugherty, Associate Professor of Choral and Vocal Pedagogy at the University of Kansas, Kate DeVore, Voice/Speech Pathologist and owner of Total Voice, Inc. and a theater voice, speech and dialect coach at Columbia College Chicago and The School at Steppenwolf , Marco Guzmán, Assistant Professor of Voice at the University of Chile School of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Art Joslin, Education and Outreach Coordinator for the National Center for Voice and Speech, Lynn Maxfield, Associate Director of the National Center for Voice and Speech, Scott McCoy, professor of voice and pedagogy at The Ohio State University, John Nix, Associate Professor of Voice and Vocal Pedagogy at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Leda Scearce, Director of Performing Voice Programs and Development, Duke Voice Care Center, Duke University, Mara Kapsner-Smith, Clinical Instructor in Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of Washington, and Martin Spencer, voice pathologist at the Voice Center of Ohio ENT.
