The National Children’s Cancer Society Launches Sun Safety Program

Program designed to promote sun safety with elementary and middle schoolers

ST. LOUIS - Oct. 7, 2014 - PRLog -- “Sun Day-Fun Day” is a fun and exciting new program from The National Children's Cancer Society (NCCS) that educates students on how to minimize the risk of skin cancer in adulthood and provide them an opportunity to work together to raise money for kids their own age who have cancer.  “We think combining education and philanthropy is a great opportunity to highlight the importance of both being safe in the sun and giving back,” said Julie Komanetsky, Vice President of Patient and Family Services at NCCS.  “The program is really meant to be fun!  We know that children spend time outside and that’s good for them—but we also want them to be safe in the sun.”

Schools can commit to Sun Day-Fun Day by promoting sun safety and encouraging fundraising on behalf of the NCCS at the same time.  The NCCS has created Sun Day-Fun Day posters, grade-appropriate sun safety activities, fundraising materials, and many other great resources to make the program easy to coordinate and fun for everyone.

In addition to learning about sun safety, students have an opportunity to help raise money to support children with cancer.  The NCCS will award $50 for a party to the classroom at a participating school that raises the most money for children with cancer.

“In order to truly promote sun safety, we’re encouraging school to also incorporate that message into their fundraising efforts.  For example, schools may offer classrooms the opportunity to earn an extended recess one day by raising a set amount of money.  Of course, extended recess means more time in the sun, so we want the schools to also encourage students to play in the shade or wear sunscreen!”

The program is free and available to all elementary and middle schools in the United States.  To learn more about the program or to register a school to participate, visit www.theNCCS.org/SunDay-FunDay.
