Study: Researchers use new materials to develop potentially stronger, cheaper dental implants

Oct. 6, 2014 - PRLog -- CALABASAS, Calif. — For many patients, dental implants may be unaffordable, but that may soon be changing.

Researchers from the Autonomous University of Baja California, in the East Coast of Mexico, have developed a new generation dental implant by using mixtures of polymers with ceramic and a light consistency, optimizing the performance of the implant, ScienceDaily reports.

The researchers also took into account the repetitive force of chewing to ensure that the impact of stress is absorbed by the piece and not by the bone structure that supports the implant.

Some formulations were also proposed that allow those teeth to be resistant to chewing and corrosion just like titanium implants, which are most often used by dentists, but are more affordable.

The goal, according to researchers, is to eventually have the implants coated with Vitamin D, because it stimulates the production of bone tissue around the implant, providing better integration.

Dr. Greg Rubin, of the Calabasas Dental Institute, said these findings demonstrate a major advancement in dental implant science and technology.

“This newly developed implant, if it can be used in clinical applications, may potentially have an enormous benefit on dental implant patients who have found it difficult to afford the procedure,” he said.

“It’s an interesting and viable solution allowing more patients to get their smiles and teeth restored. I do however feel that additional research in the area is needed.”
