MIDDLEBURY, Conn. - Oct. 3, 2014 - PRLog -- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and with national attention increasing daily, New York and Connecticut-based plastic surgeon Dr. Paula Moynahan provided insights into breast reconstruction considerations following a mastectomy. “For a woman to continue to feel feminine and beautiful,” she commented, “there are several techniques available that would restore a breast to a near-normal shape, appearance and size. Breast reconstruction is highly individualized procedure and a physically and emotionally rewarding procedure for a woman who has lost a breast due to cancer or other condition.

Surveys continuously confirm that creation of a new breast dramatically improves a woman’s self-image, her self-confidence and her quality of life. Breast reconstruction surgery provides a relatively natural-looking breast however it cannot create the look or feel exactly of the breast that was removed. It is a procedure, however, that I highly recommend for any woman facing breast cancer and a mastectomy.”

Dr. Moynahan, a renowned double-board certified plastic surgeon, and diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, stated,“Breast reconstruction could be a personally fulfilling option for women who are able to cope well with their breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Women who do not have any additional medical conditions or other illnesses that may impair healing and those who possess a positive outlook and set realistic goals for restoring their breast and body image are excellent candidates for breast reconstruction.”

“Typically,”continued Dr. Moynahan, “breast reconstruction involves several procedures performed in multiple stages and can actually begin the same time as a mastectomy. Or it can be delayed until the patient heals from a mastectomy and recovers from any additional cancer treatments. It’s essential that a woman feel ready for the emotional adjustment involved in breast reconstruction as it may take some time for her to accept the results of the reconstruction.”

Named in Castle Connolly“Top Doctors in America”, Guide to America’s Top Surgeons, America’s Registry of Outstanding Professions, Dr. Paula Moynahan is a graduate of the Medical College of Pennsylvania. She completed her residency in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York and serves as Attending Staff Member in Plastic Surgery at that hospital plus St. Mary’s and Waterbury Hospitals in Waterbury.
