Medical Waste Disposal Without Incineration – It Can Be Done!

APOPKA, Fla. - Oct. 3, 2014 - PRLog -- The negative effects of incineration are undeniable.  Incineration poisons not only the environment but also the surrounding people and food supply with toxic chemicals.  It wastes the energy-saving potential by burning products that could be reduced to a reusable product.  But what if you had the power to change this?  What if there was an option available that would be safe and effective for the environment while creating a safe and reusable byproduct?

AMB Ecosteryl provides a fully contained system for disposing of medical waste.  Unlike incineration, AMB Ecosteryl units use electricity and a specialized technology that creates a byproduct safe for future use.  Let’s take a look at the process in more detail.

·       The medical waste is first weighed (Serial 125 and 250 models) and then loaded for processing into the hopper compartment.  Built-in safeguards such level indicators ensure that the system is not overloaded with waste.

·       Next, the lid for the hopper is closed and waste is gradually pushed by a hydraulic ram (optional) and the shredder is activated.  The shredder consists of four shafts including an automatic anti-blocking device that reverses the direction of operation to unblock the unit and return it to normal operation.  Wastes falls into the under mill hopper before passing to the processing screw.

·       The processing screw is an enclosed tube with a diameter of 4.3 inches and constructed in a spiral design.  It brings products into the microwave oven where it is heated to a temperature of 100°C.  These microwave generators are designed and patented to heat products to the core with a rapid rise in temperature.  A control system adjusts the operation in order to maintain desired temperatures.

·        All waste then enters the last hopper where its temperature is maintained using external heat resistors for one more hour so that decontamination is achieved. Case studies have shown increased productivity and savings by using this system.  A study of 434 clients over three years showed an increase of 44% in productivity as well as a treatment cost per ton (including amortization) of $113 per ton!
