FREDERICK, Md. - Oct. 1, 2014 - PRLog -- e-End, a Frederick, MD firm which specializes in electronics recycling and secure data destruction for businesses and government agencies throughout the mid-Atlantic states, announced today that they have been awarded R2:2013,
ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 Certifications.

"By becoming R2:2013 Certified, along with receiving our ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 Certifications, we're further demonstrating our strong emphasis on environmental and human protection in the recycling process," said Arleen Chafitz, CEO of e-End.

The three main goals of the R2:2013 Standard for Responsible Recycling are to protect people, protect the planet and preserve resources. To make sure they are meeting these goals, e-End's process for handling of materials is based on a "Reuse, Recover and Recycle" hierarchy.

"The most responsible way for handling items that come into our facility is to first test for possible reuse through remarketing or donation to nonprofits. Anything that cannot be reused is broken down into their core components, and then sent for processing to become new raw material," said Chafitz. "By having a Zero Landfill Policy, all of the processors we use must be vetted to ensure they meet our same strict practices for properly handling hazardous materials."

Another aspect of the R2:2013 Standard is the required destruction of all data on media that a recycler processes. While most people equate computers and cell phones to be the kinds of devices that store data, the truth is that a host of other devices including copiers, printers, office telephone systems, and medical equipment can also retain personal and confidential data.  Since 2011, e-End has been AAA Certified for the destruction of data on hard drives plus all other electronic and non-paper media by the National Association for Information Destruction. With this NAID AAA Certification, e-End can certify that 100% of data is destroyed and cannot be recovered.

ISO 14001 Certification further guides e-End's commitment to environmental protection by providing a framework for the company to help reduce their environmental impact. The core of ISO 14001 is the implementation of an Environmental Management System that minimizes the harmful effects a business may have on the environment. In addition to demonstrating a commitment for decreasing office waste and increasing the recycling of materials, e-End has developed plans to reduce consumption of electricity, natural gas and diesel fuel.

The OHSAS 18001 Certification ensures a strong commitment to occupational health and safety throughout their organization. By developing a concise management system that identifies any health and safety hazards that may be present in their facility, e-End's goal is to minimize the risks faced by employees, visitors and clients. Through regular staff training and internal auditing, OHSAS 18001 outlines the processes necessary for continual improvement of safe practices.

"By taking the necessary steps to be awarded these three new Certifications, we're committing to the same desire of our clients to keep end-of-life electronics from posing a risk to environmental and public health, and the data on these devices from leading to a data breach," added Chafitz.
