JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Oct. 1, 2014 - PRLog -- Tri-Cities, TN/VA — The Spine Health Foundation encourages the public to take part in this year’s World Spine Day, a global initiative geared to raise awareness about spine health.

Held annually on Oct. 16, this year’s World Spine Day is themed “Straighten Up and Move” and is part of the Bone and Joint Decade’s Action Week.

Individuals can help raise spine health awareness by taking a photo of their spine and sharing it via social media using #luvmyspine. Photos should be tasteful, creative and help to raise awareness for healthy spine habits.

Photos may also be shared via the Spine Health Foundation Facebook page, Twitter (@SpinePros) or by sending an email to info@spinehealthfoundation.com.

“This is a great opportunity for our region to take part in a meaningful cause and raise awareness about an issue that affects so many individuals,” says Carol Conduff, founder of the Spine Health Foundation. “We know that approximately eight out of 10 Americans will suffer from some form of back pain during their lifetime, so this is an initiative that hits close to home with almost everyone.”

The National Institute of Health offers the following facts about spinal disorders:
-Americans spend at least $50 billion each year on low back pain;
-Back pain is the most common cause of job-related disability and a leading contributor to missed work; and
-Back pain is the second-most common neurological ailment in the United States.
