By: Aban Productions "Garifuna in Peril" The plot of the film follows the journey of a Garifuna language teacher Ricardo in Los Angeles as he struggles to be a good father, husband and brother while taking responsibility to preserve his native language, traditional culture and community lands against the expansion of tourism. Ricardo’ Praised as “a commendable and heartfelt piece” by Cinema Paradiso, cited as “thoughtful and enlightening” The Garifuna are a mix of West African and Carib-Arawak Indian people who originated on the island of St. Vincent in the 17th Century, and are considered indigenous to the Americas. They were exiled from the island in 1797 by the British and now live in the coastal regions of Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua and the United States. "Garifuna in Peril" originally premiered at the London Latin American Film Festival in 2012, and screened throughout 2013 to enthusiastic audiences in New York, Santa Fe, San Diego, Los Angeles, Tucson, Chicago, Seattle, Boston, Houston, Athens, Berlin and Cannes, winning several awards: “Best Narrative Feature” at the Arizona International Film Festival; “Indie Spirit Special Recognition Award” at the Boston International Film Festival; and a “Golden Remi Award for Docu-Drama” at Worldfest Houston. The film features 19 tracks of music by Garifuna artists, including Bootsy Rankin, Emilio Nunez, Aziatic, Nuru, Julito Timbalito, Punta Cartel, Ala Suazo, Isabel Flores, Garifuna Records, Bodoma, Rene Crisanto.
