International Translator’s Day is observed on September 30th

OAKLAND, Calif. - Sept. 30, 2014 - PRLog -- The International Federation of Translators (FIT) an international grouping of more than 100 associations of translators, interpreters and other language experts, promoted this celebration since 1953, and in 1991 it became an officially recognized day to celebrate the work of the more than 100,000 translators in 55 countries.

FIT selects a theme for each year’s celebration, and in 2014 it is “Language Rights: Essential to all Human Rights.” Translation is a dominant part of intercultural interaction as effective communication is required to access the rights enshrined in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

As the King James version of Genesis 11:5–6 describes God’s response to the attempt to build the Tower of Babel points out, “And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.” The importance of the work of translators and interpreters is thus to provide humans with the capacity to create “all they have imagined to do” once they are no longer restrained from achieving it by understanding each other’s language.
