Dr. Eduardo Fernandez Receives Prestigious Title of “Fellow” of ASTRO

The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) honored Dr. Fernandez for his dedication to research, patient care, education and leadership
 
PLANTATION, Fla. - Sept. 29, 2014 - PRLog -- On Tuesday, September 16, Board Certified Radiation Oncologist and 21st Century Oncology’s Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs, Eduardo Fernandez, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.S.T.R.O., accepted the esteemed distinction of being named a Fellow of The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).

Becoming a Fellow of ASTRO is one of the highest honors in the profession, created to recognize outstanding physicians for their leadership role in radiation oncology. The Fellow title is awarded to physicians based on their commitment to research, patient care, education and leadership/service.

“Dr. Fernandez is an example of a physician who has gone above and beyond in his efforts to help expand and improve cancer care locally, as well as internationally,” says Constantine Mantz, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of 21st Century Oncology. “We are proud to have Dr. Fernandez as part of our cancer care and executive leadership teams.”

Dr. Fernandez is also on the editorial board of Contemporary Radiation Oncology. The journal is a publication of OncLive, a comprehensive online resource that provides oncology professionals with the resources and information they need to provide the best patient care.

"Dr. Fernandez is someone I look up to as a leader in the field with respect to 21st Century Oncology’s international research efforts with a proven track record of publications and multinational presentations,” says Steven Finkelstein, M.D., Scottsdale Board Certified Radiation Oncologist, the company’s Chief Science Officer and the editor-in-chief of the Journal, Contemporary Radiation Oncology.

Dr. Fernandez earned his medical degree from the University of Malaga, Spain and was appointed Assistant and Associate Professor of Radiology and Medical Physics afterwards. He was Chief of Radiation Oncology at the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center for seven years and was Medical Director of the East Coast Operations for nine years. He also acted as Co-Vice President of Medical Operations.

Dr. Fernandez served as the Head of Radiation Oncology at the Cleveland Clinic Florida where he was directly responsible for the development of theExternal Beam Radiation Oncology and Prostate Seed Brachytherapy Programs. He is now a director of 21st Century C.A.R.E., a non-profit foundation dedicated to cancer patient assistance, research, and education.

He serves on the Board of Chancellors for the American College of Radiation Oncology and has published two doctoral theses. The Florida Medical Association recognizes him as a Distinguished Physician and he has received a Multicultural Leadership Award from the Florida Diversity Council.

The Fellow honorees were inducted during the 56th Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California. Since it’s inaugural year in 2006, the ASTRO Fellows Program has inducted 212 members.
