Sept. 27, 2014 - PRLog -- Local organizations from across Maryland have formed a new statewide coalition calling for an immediate halt to all school cell tower leasing deals.

The Maryland Coalition Against Cell Towers on Schools issued a Joint Statement entitled  “25 Reasons a Cell Tower has No Business Near Schools” including:

1. Safety Issues from the Industrial Machinery: fires, tower collapse and increasing worker accidents.
2. Environmental Issues such as paving over green space and cutting down trees.
3. Hazardous materials such as diesel fuel and lead acid batteries on school grounds.
4. Increased carcinogenic air pollution: Diesel generator exhaust and biocides.
5. Health issues related to daily long term exposure to microwave radiation.
6. Lack of transparency and community involvement in the decision making process.
7. Lowered property values from cell tower placement in residential areas.

The Coalition brings together the following groups: AACo Acts (Anne Arundel County Against Cell Towers at Schools), Anne Arundel County NAACP, Belvedere Assisted Living & Real Care Providers Network, Baltimore, Broadneck Community Against Cell Towers at Our Schools, Anne Arundel County, Campfield AME Church, Pikesville, Citizens Against a Cell Tower at Julius West Middle School, Rockville , Coalition of Central Prince George's County Community Organizations, Liberty Pride Volunteer Training Academy, Baltimore, Liberty Rec and Tech Center, Baltimore, Maryland Smart Meter Awareness, The Intersection, Baltimore, The Men and Family Center, Baltimore, The Committee of Concerned Citizens, Baltimore, Montgomery County NAACP, Parents' Coalition of Montgomery County, Maryland, Prince George's County NAACP, Resurrection Ministries, Baltimore, The Roots of Scouting, Baltimore, Safe Schools Prince George's, Kim Trueheart, Activist, Baltimore City, Westport Improvement Association, Baltimore, Youth Volunteer Council of Greater Baltimore – Baltimore City, Youth Volunteer Council of Greater Baltimore – Baltimore County

The Coalition is focusing efforts at the local, county and state level, combining a grassroots campaign with a legislative initiative. In 2011 Prince George's County Delegate Jolene Ivey proposed legislation to prohibit wireless telecommunications towers on public school property. In 2012, Baltimore Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke introduced an ordinance banning towers from children's school/recreation areas. In 2013 Anne Arundel County Councilman Jamie Benoit introduced similiar legislation.

The Joint Statement of the Maryland Coalition is hosted on the SafeSchoolsPG.org website. SafeSchoolsPG is a Prince George’s County advocacy group made up of parents and teachers. Their petition calling for a cancellation of school cell tower leasing contracts in Prince Georges County currently has over a thousand signatures.
