DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. - Sept. 26, 2014 - PRLog -- After the Build: Getting the Right Fence

Fencing not only serves a purpose, such as giving a homeowner added privacy or protection for their pets, but the right type of fencing can improve a property's curb appeal and increase the home's overall value when it is installed properly. But, with so many different types of fencing available, many homeowners struggle when it comes to finding the right one for their unique needs.

Here are five of the more common varieties of fencing used to finish residential properties and their pros and cons.

#1: PVC Fencing

PVC fencing, or vinyl fencing, offers the utmost in low maintenance, long-lasting beauty. This type of fencing is easy to install, resistant to rot and in most cases, will never need to be repainted. The downside of PVC fencing is that there is a price to pay for its longevity as it is one of the more expensive varieties of fencing currently available and styles and colors tend to be very limited. With that said, the long-lasting beauty of the material requires less upkeep so while it is a heftier initial investment, the fence could actually wind up saving the homeowner money over the long run.

An important note: PVC fencing can become brittle when exposed to very cold winter weather and this can lead to more frequent cracks, splits, and breaks.

#2: Chain Link Fencing

Chain link fencing is among the most affordable and easy-to-install fencing types available. While this type of fence doesn't require much in the way of maintenance, occasional "loose spots" can develop over time if the fence isn't installed right. Chain link doesn't do much for privacy unless privacy slats are purchased and installed separately. Because this type of fence is made from galvanized steel, it does have a propensity to rust after ten years, but by going with black-vinyl-coated chain-link fencing, one can extend that lifespan by five years or more.

#3: Wood Fencing

One of the most popular and economical materials used for fencing is wood. Because wood fencing is available in a variety of different wood types, such as cedar, redwood, pine, and others, the type chosen will impact the overall cost of the installation. Wood fencing is also available in a wide range of styles, from privacy fencing to split rail fencing to rail board fencing and more, so finding the right style to suit the property is easier. The primary downside of wood fencing is that it needs to be stained every few years in order to keep up its appearance and certain types of wood are more susceptible to rot and insects, which could result in parts of the fence needing to be replaced sooner than one might expect.

#4: Wrought Iron Fencing

Wrought iron fencing is strong, gorgeous, and stately. One of the reasons why this type of fencing is so beautiful is that it is usually custom-made-to-order. As a result, this is also one of the most expensive types of fencing available and why it is not frequently seen adorning the grounds of residences unless the property is historically significant. Besides the cost, the cons of wrought iron fencing are its lack of privacy and a maintenance routine that requires the fence to be sanded and repainted every two to three years.

#5: Coated Aluminum Fencing

Coated aluminum fencing is a solid pick for ornamental fences that won't see a lot of use and abuse. This type of fence requires no maintenance, no painting, and is reasonably affordable. Aluminum is a lightweight metal, however, so this type of fence can be bent or dented with relative ease. It is also ineffective for privacy uses.
