The Spirit Of Jezebel: Is It Evident In The Pastor’s Wife In New Web Drama

That’s the sentiment of Crystal Adams-Houston, the character portrayed by South Florida actress Tecovia Calvin in the web drama ZION premiering in October.  Calvin’s character is a first lady with some unorthodox terms and very clear professional desires.  While her husband, Pastor Anthony Houston loves her unconditionally, her terms and desires often create strong clashes in their marriage. The Houston’s are part of the lead storyline in ZION.  Ray Love, a gospel announcer at WMBM-AM in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale market, and director of the storyline, knows why those clashes occur, “The first lady has a bit of the Jezebel spirit. She is going to get her way!”

Biblical teaching explains that Jezebel is a false prophet inclined to seduce those around her (or him) into sexual immorality.  She does so using sorcery, threats and manipulation.  So, is this what defines the pastor’s wife in ZION?  Calvin says no.  “She’s a brat.  Her thing is - I give him exactly what he needs, and I get what I want. It's called teamwork!"

The writer/producer of ZION, award-winning playwright/journalist and author E. Claudette Freeman agrees that Calvin’s character is the epitome of a spoiled wife.  “It is clear she is a woman that is used to making progressive strides and creating her own box to do so. She is accustomed to achieving what she sets her mind to and using what influence she has.  I don’t see that as the Jezebel spirit – I see it as determined – and in Crystal’s case often obnoxiously bratty with a touch of stubborn.”

Edwin and Sophia Christiaan wrote in a 2009 blog post (jezebelspirit.net), “One of the main purposes of this evil spirit of Jezebel is to have the wives in the marriage take over the spiritual headship from their husbands, teaching and controlling them, and in doing so, reversing God’s order for marriage. Unless the husband fights his wife for supremacy, he will ultimately end up assuming the second place in the marriage.”

Freeman says she certainly sees why some might catch a glimpse of what appears to be an errant spirit in the behavior and style of Houston.  She does things that are clearly manipulative in an effort to gain her husband’s approval, distract him from what she is doing and to temper him when she realizes a situation has or is getting out of control.  She does try to control his responses using her feminine wiles, and tapping into those things that arouse him.

Yet, Calvin says it is not about knocking him out of his position as head of their home; or using threats to force him to make a decision in her favor, nor does she exercise the subtle seduction behaviors with those outside of her marriage.  Crystal, says Calvin, does it because she trusts the fact that God has joined her with the one man that can handle her. “Anthony supports Crystal’s endeavors. Sometimes, she just has to give him a gentle nudge. Whether he knows it or not, his no is simply a delayed yes and Crystal loves a good challenge.”

Calvin, Freeman, and Love are looking forward to the lively discussions around Crystal’s shenanigans and her wonderful ability to do the very things that she knows her husband would prefer she not do. Yet, in that and in being a consummate professional journalist, Crystal is very happy in her role as a wife and a mother.  She gains a sense of peace, strength, and security in the life blossoming in her family.  Something many woman work towards daily.
