Halloween will start early at Southtowne Shopping Center this year, with gruesome silhouettes, original artworks and unknown treasures filling the walk-in display cases of Halloween City.

Roger Whiting, a local artist and teacher with Art Access Utah, was strolling near the Halloween City in Sandy and noticed three massive, empty walk-in display cases connected to this pop-up store.  After pondering on the joyless nature and potential of these cases, Whiting thought of the fantastic creativity of his Art Access students at South Valley School, a West Jordan school for young adults with disabilities. After some negotiation, Halloween City agreed to help support an impromptu art show on their premises.

Throughout the months of September and October, Whiting has been supervising bi-weekly art lessons with the South Valley Students to design and create the three enormous displays.

Display one will be filled with large silhouettes of gruesome Halloween figures and characters.

Display two will be filled with original framed artworks created in the students' own unique styles.

Display three will be a three-dimensional graveyard scene, complete with larger-than-life "Day of the Dead"-inspired skeleton heads and other random sculptural elements.

On October 23 Whiting, along with the artists of South Valley School, will reveal and celebrate their completed artworks, as well as become a temporary part of the three-dimensional display. Light refreshments will be served.

This project is made possible with funding from Art Access/VSA Utah in cooperation with the USOE Special Education Services Unit.
