Siren Call: Last Chance to Enter Scotland’s Women Only Cycling Event

PERTH, Scotland - Sept. 25, 2014 - PRLog -- A last minute siren call has been issued for Macmillan Cycletta Scotland, the UK’s leading cycling series especially for women, which will take place at the iconic Scone Palace in Perthshire on 5th October 2014. Entries for the women only cycling event close on Monday 29th September at 9pm, and already organisers are expecting over 600 ladies to participate.

The event series, which is backed by series ambassador, Olympian Victoria Pendleton CBE, and will be opened by Commonwealth Games cyclist Charline Joiner, TV personality Cat Cubie and British slalom skier Charlie Guest, proves there’s no shortage of girl power behind the pedals.

And with over 1.2 million Scots owning a bicycle, but only 18% of them estimated to use it regularly, Macmillan Cycletta is perfect for the novice female cyclist. Although this year, for the very first time, a 100km distance is also available for ladies up for a more testing challenge. So far, the Macmillan Cycletta 100km is proving the most popular distance with the Scottish female cyclists.

Commenting, Nick Rusling, CEO of event organisers Human Race, said:

“We’re really excited about our second Macmillan Cycletta event in Scotland and with such a positive response, we’re sure there are a few more ladies out there who might want to take part and we don’t want them to miss out. The stunning Perthshire landscape enables us to offer course options to suit all abilities, not to mention the location of the start and finish line in the grounds of the historic Scone Palace, so whether you’re a regular cyclist or you’ve not been on a bike in years there’s a distance option for you.”

Many of the participants in Macmillan Cycletta Scotland are raising money for partner charity Macmillan Cancer Support. It was this opportunity that appealed to Sarah Doran (40) from Glasgow who signed up to take part in the event for a second year running.

Sarah commented:

“I took part in Macmillan Cycletta last year and, when they announced places were open I immediately signed up again. This was the perfect opportunity for me to push myself a little bit more, see some of Scotland’s magnificent countryside and really get fit.”

“My Mum was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and Macmillan Cancer Support were such a tremendous help to her and our whole family when she was ill, this is my opportunity to give something back. Mum has since fought off cancer twice and she’s a real inspiration to me. I’ve got my training plan and tips, thanks to the Macmillan Cycletta website, and I just can’t wait to get to the start line of the event and pit my chances against one of Scotland’s fastest female road cyclists, Charline Joiner.”

Macmillan Cycletta Scotland is open to ladies aged 12 and upwards (though anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult), and includes different distances starting from just 20km. They also have a bike hire option so there’s not even a requirement to own your own bike!

For those ladies wanting to set themselves a bigger challenge there is a Classic distance of 40 km and, for those who want to push themselves that little bit further, a Challenge distance of 63km and a 100km Macmillan distance, which as mentioned, is already proving the most popular.

Girls aged between 12 and 15 can also take part when accompanied by an adult, making it perfect for mother and daughter teams to participate, as well as Secondary school pupils, and even Girl Guide troops. The key message that organisers want to get across is that the event is open to all women, young and old, with or without a bike, beginner or enthusiast.
