HOUSTON - Sept. 24, 2014 - PRLog -- McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. (http://www.mccarthy.com/locations/houston/), a Texas builder for 35 years, recently completed the $35.6 million rehabilitation of Wharf 1 at the Port of Houston Authority’s Barbours Cut Terminal, located in Morgan’s Point, Texas.

The project included the rehabilitation of Wharf 1, which is a 1,333-lineal-foot structure used for the receipt and shipment of containerized freight intended for both foreign and domestic trade. The upgrade was proposed by the Port of Houston Authority to allow for the purchase and placement of larger gantry cranes for ship unloading and loading, which is necessary to accommodate Post Panamax container vessels after completion of the New Panamax expansion by the Panama Canal Authority. The project was successfully completed early, under budget and with no recordable injuries.

“The Barbours Cut rehabilitation was a great project to work on. McCarthy and the Port of Houston Authority worked together to achieve another successful project at the port,” said Kurt Knebel, McCarthy’s vice president of civil operations. “With Barbours Cut known as one of the premium container-handling facilities in the country, our team worked diligently and paid close attention to detail to ensure the final product lived up to its reputation.”

As part of the rehabilitation, McCarthy demolished portions of the existing structure and constructed new cast-in-place concrete crane beams, supported by drilled shafts.  Additionally, McCarthy upgraded the facilities’ utilities, including potable water and electrical services, in addition to constructing a new precast stevedore building.

“The completion of this project at Barbours Cut allows us to move forward in making sure the Port Authority is providing the best facilities possible for customers,” said Jeff Davis, Managing Director of Operations for the Port Authority. “We look forward to the new cranes for the facility being delivered early next year.”

The Barbours Cut terminal has competitive tariff rates and efficient transportation of containers, and is an ideal port of call for shippers with cargo originating from or destined for the United States, Midwest and West Coast.
