LOS ANGELES - Sept. 22, 2014 - PRLog -- The National Council of Negro Women Inc. View Park (NCNW) will celebrate their 79th Anniversary on December 7, 2014. The Red Ribbon Affair Benefit Gala Awards Dinner and Fashion Show will help to bring awareness to communities within the Los Angeles area that continue to face disparities in the burden of inadequate healthcare and education experienced by people of color. This gala will honor actress, author and activist, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Rev. Cecil ”Chip” Murray, Michael Weinstein E.D. AIDS Healthcare Foundation and Community Outreach Specialist Sonia Hooper.  Sheryl Lee Ralph, a Tony Award winning actress and star of two popular television sitcoms has used her voice as a staunch advocate for HIV/AIDS research and education and prevention of the disease. Ms. Ralph has worked tirelessly for over twenty years to bring attention to the impact the disease has had within the African-American and Latino community.

Honoree, Michael Weinstein, founder and president of the AIDS Health Foundation has been an activist since the age of 13 and has received a proclamation declaring him a “dynamic and inspirational leader” and “an unrelenting and tireless force in the struggle to stem the tide of HIV infection.”  Today, Weinstein, as leader of the largest private provider of AIDS services in the U.S. travels the globe - as former Governor Gray Davis cited “a positive force for change”

Ms. Sonia Hooper, honoree, has served as a conciliator for the Greater Watts and Los Angeles area linking the Nickerson Gardens Housing development with Medical organizations in Los Angeles. Ms. Hooper has also been instrumental in the development and opening of the new NCNW Inc. Wellness Station located in Pueblo Del Rio Housing

Rev. Dr. Cecil L. “Chip” Murray Emeritus Pastor of First AME Church will be honored for his involvement in crisis issues facing his community.  He was instrumental in securing job-training, homeowner loans, assisting families with affordable housing, and HIV/AIDS education and awareness.  After retiring from his post as pastor of FAME he was appointed as the John R. Tansey Chair of Christian Ethics in the School of Religion at the University of Southern California. In addition, Rev. Murray was named a senior fellow of the Center for Religion and Civic Culture. He chairs the USC Cecil Murray Center for Community Engagement (http://crcc.usc.edu/initiatives/murraycenter/).

The African American and Latino American people are the largest population in the community with the highest number of preventable health diseases. Yet, their access to adequate health care is limited by their lack of knowledge and/or resources.   Each year their services nationally (NCNW) reach nearly 4 million women through 39 national affiliate organizations and more than 240 sections through a variety of activities.

Additional participants in this year’s event will include community leaders, professionals in the fields of medicine, education, small businesses, corporations and those in sports and entertainment.

NCNW’s historical significance continues to thrive on the principals of the founder, Mary McLeod Bethune. That is, to propel women and girls through increased knowledge, professional connections, collaborations and continuous development. NCNW principles focus on empowering women of color by creating and impacting meaningful educational programs for women and their families in communities who are challenged by lack of resources and finances.
