Los Angeles dentist Dr. Greg Rubin voices concern over beads found in toothpaste

Sept. 22, 2014 - PRLog -- CALABASAS, Calif. — Tiny plastic beads are found in a majority of toothpastes on the market, and now these microbeads are becoming "hard to swallow" for many dentists.

Leading dental professional Dr. Greg Rubin, of the Calabasas Dental Institute, and many other dental hygienists, say that even though the beads are deemed safe by the Food and Drug Administration, they may still cause dental hygiene problems which may lead to gingivitis or periodontal disease.

“Because these tiny beads don’t disintegrate, they may get stuck in the deep gum tissue or any crevice in the mouth and trap bacteria. If the bacteria are not removed, it may cause an infection that can move from the gum to the bone, causing severe dental problems,” Dr. Greg Rubin said.

The American Dental Association issued a press release in response to the growing concern.

“If the council’s evaluation determines sufficient scientific evidence exists that an ADA Seal-Accepted product poses a health risk, the council has the authority to withdraw the Seal from that product. At this time, clinically relevant dental health studies do not indicate that the Seal should be removed from toothpastes that contain polyethylene microbeads.”

Dr. Rubin said that if you have any concerns regarding the safety of your toothpaste, he recommends to call his office or come by to get expert advice on oral hygiene products that work best for you.
