“Even before the Ebola crisis, Liberia had one of the lowest rates of electrical grid distribution in the world”, according to company CEO and Founder Mark Bent. “Less than 1% of the population in Monrovia has access to electricity. And outside of the capital, there is no electrical grid and the only power available is supplied by diesel generators”. Bent also noted, “This is exactly the scenario we had in mind when we designed these devices. They provide wide-beam illumination, lighting a small room or an area in a clinic. They are incredibly durable and exceed US military-specification. We make them not only water-proof, we make them air-tight, as in the high humid conditions found in West Africa, the water laden air could enter and very quickly destroy the printed circuit board and electronics. They will provide over eight hours of illumination after a full solar charge and the batteries will last for over two years of every night use prior to easy replacement” American Light Works has provided many thousands of their lights to communities around the world which have been impacted by natural disasters since starting production operations in 2006. They have worked with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, the US Agency for International Development and as a member of the Clinton Global Initiative, in places like Haiti, Afghanistan, Pakistan and sub-Saharan Africa. “Liberia is different than the other light distributions, it is personal”, states Bent. “I was a US diplomat based in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire when the Liberian civil war started in December of 1989. When the American Embassy closed in Monrovia the following year, due to the fighting, we became the primary source of information for Washington while also working to end the fighting and protect American and Liberian lives. By every metric and evaluation we failed and more than 200,000 died and many thousands more were displaced and became refugees. This is a country founded by freed American slaves, one of our strongest allies during the cold war confrontations in Africa and we let them down terribly”.
