Kickstarter Projects - Making Money out of Fun?

Sept. 20, 2014 - PRLog -- It’s that 'everyone’s at it' moment again, when someone succeeds with a great, unusual ‘it’s never going to work’ idea, and then all the others spring up.

Of course, I’m talking about the guy that thought he’d start a kickstarted campaign to make his home made potato salad:

What a funny chap, I mean, you’d have to have no sense of humour not to have a laugh at this. Oh look he’s put a potato salad on kickstarter - he made us laugh. Of course, lets give him a dollar. And there’s 12 thousand of us. For many it started becoming less funny, the minute he reached his first thousand, went viral, and global, and became the 4th most popular campaign on kickstarter. Was this his fault? Absolutely not.
The guy has even pledged to give the money to charity. But of course, like any great idea, and let’s be frank, it was a GREAT idea, there are going to be people who want to replicate it: the ‘copiers'. Will they succeed? Unlikely - these are usually one time only ideas - the joke has been told and the novelty has been paid for - much like the guy who once sold a million pixels on a homepage.

Now the entrepreneurs and entrepreneur wannabes of this planet take to their kitchen, to decide what gastronomic money spinners people will chew on. To succeed someone will really have to find an angle that will outweigh both the comedy, the pledges and the shock factor of Brown’s potato salad. Here’s a sniff of what’s out there:

This guy made a few laugh. He’s carbon-copied the campaign, but made his a sweet potato salad - I feel his main image lets him down. It doesn’t look particularly tasty. The good thing about the original potato salad campaign is that looking at the image actually made me want to eat potato salad. This one simply does not.

Pancakes seem to be a popular theme - this guy has offered to send pancakes in the mail, so people can look forward to having maple syrup seep out of their envelope. Hower, he raised over 600 dollars - hardly a waste of time. His idea does have some novelty, although perhaps some hygiene concerns:

This guy didn’t really put much effort in - he wants his pancakes to touch the ceiling. The only pledge is 30 dollars, and he will post you a pancake for that, much like the guy above, but seems less friendly.

It’s not just the guys who are jumping aboard to bandwagon… this girl with a Russian/European accent modestly wants to make the best pancakes in the world, and has already reached her target - perhaps because she put a bit more effort in - She made an entertaining video and even a website www.tatyanaskitchen.com, where she thanks people for their donations. She also offers to sing a video to donators, but perhaps the most exciting/unique thing about this campaign, is that one of the pledges gets the apron she is wearing in the video (the only thing she appears to be wearing!!). Maybe I’ll see what the piggy bank says at the end of the month.

So as kickstarter has lessened it’s criteria for campaigns, more and more of these joke ideas seem to pop up, but can the copiers successfully succeed the potato salad in making thousands of dollars? Perhaps not, but at least they won’t go hungry.
