Invisible Mothers Break the Silence on Pregnancy and Baby Loss

50 Women from Around the World Discuss Being a Mother Without a Living Child

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Sept. 20, 2014 - PRLog -- Asheville, NC:  On Sept. 15, 2014, author and counselor Emily Long launches her Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for publication and distribution of her book, “Invisible Mothers.” Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing, crowd-sourced funding platform for creative projects like “Invisible Mothers.” Long’s book details the isolation, grief, and lack of effective support for mothers who experience pregnancy and baby loss, as well as what is needed to promote healing and understanding around this sensitive topic.

“Invisible Mothers” describes the experiences of 50 women from 6 countries whose children died, and who have no other living children. The magnitude and complexity of pregnancy and the loss of a child, and the true depth of support needed for this loss, is rarely understood in western society uncomfortable with death, grief, and pain.  One Invisible Mother said of the silence around this topic - “People’s discomfort around this topic is not a good enough reason to remain silent.”

When a mother has no other living children, her role as a mother becomes deniable and invisible.  The pain of these mothers is intensified by misinformation and lack of awareness by others around them. Those who do acknowledge the loss often fall back on statements such as “you can have another baby” or “at least it was an early loss“ or “don’t worry, you are young yet.”  While usually well intended, these types of statements are often painful.

With “Invisible Mothers”, Long seeks to raise awareness and increase support for all mothers who have lost children, including those without living children.  This book will provide information and ideas for how to best support those living without their children.

A successful Kickstarter campaign will enable the publication of this book, as well as its distribution as a valuable resource to hospitals, birthing centers, counseling clinics, libraries, and infertility clinics.
