Eight Port Richmond Stores Join the My Plate Challenge

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Sept. 22, 2014 - PRLog -- Eight restaurants, delis, and a supermarket have signed up for the My Plate Challenge.

Each store has agreed to offer their customers one healthy, tasty dish using the USDA’s My Plate proportions: half vegetables or fruit, one-quarter starch, and one-quarter protein. Portion sizes have jumped 40 to 60 percent since the 1990s, and the My Plate Challenge shows customers what portion sizes should be. It’s also an opportunity to taste-test Mexican and Peruvian dishes and check out the stores’ specialties.

The competition runs from Oct. 1 to Oct.8, with awards given out on Oct. 14. The competitors are:

La Merced, 131 Port Richmond Ave.

Los Potrillos Taqueria Restaurant, 150 Port Richmond Ave.

EHR Corp. Grocery Store, 151 Port Richmond Ave.

Monte Alban Mexico Supermarket, 170 Port Richmond Ave.

Key Foods Deli Department, 331 Port Richmond Ave

Sara Restaurante Peruano, 1569 Castleton Ave.

5 De Mayo, 392 Port Richmond Ave.

Plaza San Jeronimo, 465 Port Richmond Ave.

Wagner College students Jazmin Diaz and Noah Wolthausen, community activists Maria and Vanessa Mendoza, and SINFI members Robert Stein, Jody Stoll, Jennifer Fein-Cunningham, and Susan Fowler visited the stores to ask the owners to sign up. Wagner College Professor Margarita Sanchez translated the materials into Spanish.

Local chefs and nutritionists will work with the stores prior to the competition to ensure that the plates meet the nutritional guidelines. Customer ballots will be handed out throughout Port Richmond and customer responses will be part of the judging.

Port Richmond High School Culinary Arts seniors and their teachers have agreed to judge the contest.
