By: KCMJ 93.9 FM Community-Powered Radio While the station raises $20,000 to equip studios and install a transmitter and tower, KCMJ programming will be available on the internet, at www.kcmj.org. “We’re launching a crowdfunding campaign now to run through November 13, so we felt it would be a big plus to get KCMJ up and running on the web. This way the public will get a taste of what community radio can be for Colorado Springs,” explained founder Dennis Apuan. Colorado Media Justice Foundation, the non-profit station licensee, plans to be broadcasting over the local FM airwaves at 93.9 in 2015. Station volunteers will “flip the switch” at 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning and begin webcasting from Soda Springs Park in Manitou. The day’s program will include musical performances from the park’s stage, including Colorado Floyd, Tenderfoot Bluegrass and J. Miller Band. Listeners can hear the program by visiting www.kcmj.org. According to KCMJ Program Chair Arlene Hall, “We’re delighted to launch with a day of programming highlighting a fun local event, because our intent is for KCMJ to support all the great local organizations, artists and events we have in town.” Once the Manifest remote ends, KCMJ volunteers plan to program the station 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. “At first, our local, original program offerings will be limited, but we’ll add programs as hosts, producers and needed equipment come online,” notes Hall. One of the programs that will be repeated frequently is the KCMJ Visioneers Roundtable. This is a conversation among the station’s founders about their vision of what community radio for Colorado Springs will be. The program was recorded recently over coffee in the Teacher’s Lounge at Ivywild School. Other program offerings will include several music shows, including jazz and bluegrass. Front Range Radio, a program highlighting the music of undiscovered acts, will be among the early offerings. The Labor Advocate will be another locally produced program on the schedule. A live call-in local affairs program called We Have Issues is in the works. Some of the syndicated offerings at first will include Bioneers, Ecotopia, Big Picture Science, CPR News, and WINGS (from Womens International News Gathering Service). KCMJ is volunteer-run, and ongoing expenses will be funded by listener/members. A supporter can become a member of KCMJ with a $25 contribution. The group is launching a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo on September 19.
