Inn-fresco: How We Helped Timothy Taylor’s Pubs With Award-Winning Transformation

LEEDS, U.K. - Sept. 19, 2014 - PRLog -- In the last two months The Woolly Sheep Inn has been voted Yorkshire’s Favourite Pub 2014 and also the winner in two regional champion categories of the Great British Pub Awards. Part of the key to the pub's success has been the new-and-improved beer garden installed by inn-fresco, supplier and installer of outdoor solutions.

The Timothy Taylor’s pub is perfectly situated in the heart of the busy market town of Skipton and is a popular pub with both locals and tourists. Maximising all available space is crucial and this includes the outside area which, in 2011, was not being well utilised. The Manager wanted to enhance the existing outside space and make it more welcoming for customers to eat and drink in.

In order to make the most of their 310m2 courtyard, The Woolly Sheep opted for the Med system - a timber-framed structure with a retractable PVC cover. Timber decking, outdoor heaters and contemporary wicker furniture completed the cosy and stylish arrangement.

All of a sudden, drinkers were choosing to sit out all evening, enabling the pub to accommodate a considerably greater number of customers. Bar Manager Andrew Goodall was astonished by this turn of events:

"The Med has only been installed three weeks and we are already seeing the difference it is making to our pub. More customers are eating and drinking outside and because it looks so impressive it has been a real talking point within the area. The impact it has had on takings has been huge and it is only Autumn. In the summer, when we can retract the roof back so that customers can enjoy the sunshine, we will be even busier. The flexibility that the Med provides is fantastic - we are even planning live music events under it in the summer!”

Three years on, The Woolly Sheep remains a favourite spot for locals and visitors to the area. And it is not the only Timothy Taylor’s pub to reap the benefits of a well presented outdoor area.

The Royal Oak, Keighley Creates A Sanctuary for Sports Fans

Inspired by The Woolly Sheep’s transformation, the Royal Oak had the Med retractable roof system installed the following year. This time, the space between the back door and the paved outdoor area was completely covered, creating a seamless transition from inside to outside. Two large TV screens were added in each corner so that sports fans could relax outside.

”The difference has been fantastic,” enthused Jimmy Lea, manager of the Royal Oak. “We have a real point of difference from the competition and it meets the needs of those eating at lunchtime and those wanting to drink and party at night. We have another small covered area next to the Med which has a BBQ in it so we can now offer food and run outside events without having to worry about what the weather might be like or the impact on our internal trade. Equally when the sun does shine people want to be at our pub because they can sit out and make the most of the sunshine so we have also attracted lots of new customers”.

Later in 2012, the Royal Oak picked up Best Garden at the Great British Pub Awards.

Timothy Taylor’s clearly recognises the importance of offering its customers something that little bit different - and this recognition seems to have paid dividends for these two Yorkshire pubs.
