Follow on Google News | Free Taize Prayer and Concert October 1, 2014, at St. Joseph Chapel, MilwaukeeConcert to feature choir from St. Michael Parish, and songs in six languages
Using the ecumenical prayer style of the brothers of Taize, France, there will be readings, songs, silent reflection and prayers of intercession and adoration beginning at 6 p.m. At 6:45, a concert featuring a choir from St. Michael Parish under the direction of Barbara Tracey will extend the prayer. The focus of the October 1 prayer and the concert will be “Blessed are those who work for peace: they will be called children of God.” Barbara, who coordinated the music for this summer’s Archdiocesan Synod, has been involved at St. Michael Parish for 21 years, and has led the choir from its inception. The parish has a large number of Southeast Asian and Latino members, and music from the many cultures included in those communities will be sung over the course of the evening. “I picked one song from each of the ethnic groups represented by the choir members,” Barbara said, “and the song ‘We Are One’ combines all the languages. I tried to choose songs that represent the many different musical styles of the cultures we bring, while making sure they’re also accessible to the ears of people who aren’t familiar with the languages.” The theme provides an important context for the music. “October is the month of St. Francis, the peacemaker,” “This is a chance to realize the richness and diversity in Milwaukee and the Church in Milwaukee, especially in its Asian cultures,” Barbara said. “In a small way, this experience will open that for people.” She also hopes that it will be a fun, joyful experience for all who attend. “Whenever I bring a choir somewhere, everyone is uplifted.” An interesting feature of this month’s concert is that it isn’t just a listening experience for the audience—it will be participatory. Materials will be provided to the audience so that everyone can join in. St. Joseph Chapel is located at 27th and Greenfield (1501 S. Layton Blvd.) in Milwaukee. Free parking is available in the lot behind St. Joseph Center, accessible on 29th and Orchard (Alexia Circle entrance).
