Study: Antidepressants may cause dental implant failure

Sept. 17, 2014 - PRLog -- CALABASAS, Calif. — If you take antidepressants, your dental implants may be at risk.

According to a team of researchers at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, people who take some of the most common antidepressants are twice as likely to have their implants fail as compared to those who are not taking the drugs.

Some of the common drugs are Celexa, Paxil, Lexapro, Prozac and Zoloft.

The researchers looked at the records of dental implants done over a six-year period, between 2007-2013, in a Canadian clinic and discovered that antidepressants have a strong negative effect on dental implants, almost equal to that of smoking.

Other studies suggest that antidepressants increase the risk of bone fracture and reduce bone formation, which can cause the dental implant to fail.

Dr. Greg Rubin, a leading dental expert of the Calabasas Dental Institute, says that a dental implant needs to be surrounded by strong and sufficient bone in order to last.

“If any drug causes the breakdown of bone that surrounds the implant, there is a greater chance of the implant not surviving,” Dr. Greg Rubin said. “This dental implant study has merit, but I believe more research is needed to determine the degree to which antidepressants impact dental implants.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, nearly 70 percent of Americans take at least one prescription drug and more than half take two.

Dr. Greg Rubin recommends that patients who are on an antidepressant do their research before choosing a qualified dentist.

He and his team of dental implant specialists are highly versed in potential problems associated with dental implant failure.
