Hope Matters 4th Annual Coffee for a Cure with Starbucks Coffee CompanyCoffee for a Cure Campaign on October 24th, 2014 is set to benefit the Martina McBride Breast Cancer Research Grant at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (Frances Williams Preston Lab-TJ Martell Foundation Fund)
By: Hope Matters One of the teammates involved in the fundraising efforts had begun her own campaign a few years earlier with Starbucks Coffee Company. Maryann Makekau is the author of the Little Pink Book™ series and founder of Hope Matters, an organization founded to make a difference in hurting lives worldwide. In 2010, she launched “Coffee for a Cure” with the help of Starbucks managers in her neighborhood of Northwest Florida. Her vision of turning Starbucks pink for a day to honor breast cancer awareness and raise research dollars through bags of coffee sold hit a chord with the coffee company. Makekau is set to run the fourth year of “Coffee for a Cure” on Friday, October 24th, 2014, having gained support from Starbucks Coffee Company regional and district managers covering the entirety of North Florida. Furthermore, the campaign is already branching out with sign-ons in Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, Texas, Arizona, and California, and has the support of two national foundations that are intent on spreading the word: Girls Love Mail and Little Pink Houses of Hope. Starbucks is the largest coffee house company in the world, with more than 18,000 stores worldwide. “Coffee for a Cure” participating stores donate $1.00 per bag of coffee sold during the fundraising campaign held in October. Makekau assigned the beneficiary of this year’s campaign to the Martina McBride Breast Cancer Research Grant. As a Team Martina member, she’s dedicated proceeds to the fight against the aggressive and hard-to-treat triple negative breast cancer. If 200 country music fans can raise $40,500 for the research, just imagine what “Coffee for a Cure” can do to support the ground-breaking research at the Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center. Hope Matters goal for the 2014 Coffee for a Cure: gain support in all 50 states and raise an eyebrow in Starbucks Corporate Office. The ultimate vision: Coffee for a Cure will blossom into an annual event at all Starbucks locations to make a difference in hurting lives, just as Makekau intended.
