PORTLAND, Ore. - Sept. 15, 2014 - PRLog -- World-renowned autism specialist and Director of Global Education at the Autism Treatment Center of America Raun K. Kaufman, who himself recovered from severe autism, will speak in Portland on October 4th at the Oregon Convention Center.

For any parent, hearing that your child has been diagnosed with autism is devastating. As a litany of all the things your child will never be able to do unfolds, all you see are closed doors. Your child will never hug you, play with you, or make a friend. They’ll never go to college, land their dream job, or fall in love. Conventional wisdom tells you that there’s no hope. But conventional wisdom is wrong. Recovery from autism is possible. Raun K. Kaufman is living proof.

As a boy, Kaufman was diagnosed by doctors as severely autistic, with no language and an I.Q. below 30, destined to spend his life institutionalized. Flash forward to today, and he’s a thriving Ivy-league graduate who lives a normal life with no trace of the disorder. And the method his parents developed to help him – The Son-Rise Program – went on to help thousands worldwide.

In his revolutionary book, AUTISM BREAKTHROUGH: The Groundbreaking Method That Has Helped Families All Over the World (St. Martin’s), Raun K. Kaufman argues that enormous progress—and sometimes complete recovery—is possible. He explains why most methods miss the mark (and sometimes make things worse) by trying to force children to conform to a world they don’t understand. Only by joining children with autism in their own worlds first, Kaufman expounds, can we help them cross the bridge to ours and defy their often-very-limited prognoses.

Autism, a complex developmental disability, typically appears during the first three years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills.  Autism rates have skyrocketed in recent years, with CDC finding that the current rates are 1 in 68 children, 1 in 42 boys.

The Portland stop is part of a nationwide book tour to promote AUTISM BREAKTHROUGH. The critically-acclaimed book is a step-by-step guide with clear, practical strategies that readers can implement immediately.

The free lecture will be held at the Oregon Convention Center. It will offer specific tools for parents to help their children on the autism spectrum. Often, at the time of diagnosis, parents receive only limited options.  This lecture is designed to give them a plethora of new options.

Along with lecture tours in the U.S., United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, and Norway, Raun K. Kaufman has been featured in a wide range of media, including NPR, BBC, Fox News, and People Magazine.  Seen by over 300 million people worldwide, the NBC-TV movie, Son-Rise: A Miracle of Love, recounted his story.

Kaufman now lives part-time in Portland, his “favorite city in the world.”
