ATLANTA - Sept. 15, 2014 - PRLog -- According to LiceDoctors Head Lice Treatment and Nit Removal Services in the Atlanta,Georgia area, while several schools in the district have become more lenient with their lice policies, some retain "no nit" policies.  The schools that have abandoned 'no nit" polilcies, and now allow students to attend school if they have nits, have done so with the backing of key medical associations including the CDC, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National School Nurses Association, and Atlanta's Children's Health Care Services.

The reasoning behind the revised recommendations by these groups is that too many students were losing out on days of schools for something that is a nuisance but not an illness. In addition. the American Academy of Pediatrics states that by the time a case is identified, usually several days or weeks have passed giving the child sufficient chance to spread lice to classmates.

This trend has been met with mixed reviews from school nurses across the region. Dunwoody elementary school nurse, Stephanie Clark says that in her school, they still have a "no nit" policy in order to contain the spread of lice. "We don't allow children into school with nits because you don't know when the nits will hatch and become lice and then the child is contagious. Our school principal is on board with this approach. It's really up to the principal. Even though the Children's Health Care Service recommend that children with nits be allowed into school, so that they don't miss days, I know of other schools in the area that also have 'no nit policies."

In the city of Atlanta, the schools generally maintain "no nit" policies although, school nurses Ms. Sanders of Benteen Elementary School and Ms. Dixon of Boyd, maintain that they have not had to contend with lice this year at all.

Generally, the schools in the Atlanta area do not do head lice screenings of the total school population at the start of the year. According to Ms Clark, "There are just too many kids for that. We haven't done that in the six years that I have been at the school. Fortunately, many of our school parents contact professional companies when their kids are infested rather than self-treating."

The debate on the topic of head lice is likely to continue according to Wendy Beck, owner of LiceDoctors Head Lice Treatment and Nit Removal Service., who is has national renown as a lice expert with 20 years experience in the field, "There are two sides to 'no nit" policies. While all children need to be in school to learn, parents who have invested time and money into getting rid of nits from their children's hair, are understandably concerned that their children can pick up another case if  other kids aren't treated properly. It is essential for students with nits to be treated with a follow-up plan."
