Costco to Host Book Signing for Local Lafayette Square Author

Lonnie J. Hovey will be available to sign copies of pictorial history

WASHINGTON - Sept. 15, 2014 - PRLog -- Lafayette Square, by local author Lonnie J. Hovey, boasts 200 vintage images, many of which have never been published, and tells the history of the White House’s iconic front yard.

Lafayette Square’s rich history dates back to the founding of the District of Columbia when Pierre L’Enfant planned it as part of the grounds for the president’s house. The square was one of the first open spaces within the city to be designed as a public park. Across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, the park’s neighborhood became home to presidents, vice presidents, cabinet members, diplomats, inventors, journalists, heroes, authors, scientists, law breakers, and scoundrels.

Today, the square and its sculptures are surrounded by government offices, but symbolically, it is the White House’s front yard, making it an attractive destination. Using historic photographs, Lafayette Square captures the square’s social, political, and architectural history, highlighting important past events.

Highlights of Lafayette Square include:

Many of the images have been forgotten within the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, and have been hidden from view since they were first photographed or published.
The park has been a location to exhibit the First Amendment right for freedom of speech and peaceful assembly since the Suffragettes first silently picketed the White House in 1917 to gain a woman’s right to vote.
Every four years, the square hosts the incoming president’s inaugural parade with a reviewing stand for the president, vice-president, their families and guests.
