HOUSTON - Sept. 11, 2014 - PRLog -- This past Wendesday, David Lorms had a great visit with one of Houston’s Top Chiropractors, Dr. Kenneth Lester. From 6 acres with ducks and goats in Orange TX to a thriving Chiropractic practice in the Heights, Kenneth Lester has had quite a journey! “My Mom was a teacher and my dad worked the land so I grew up with a serious work ethic! We couldn’t do anything until the all the work was done. I’m still like that now.” Lester has always been active, athletic and intelligent. In high school he was an honor graduate, on the swim team and attended CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) “to keep me honest.”

One of Lester’s first career inspirations was his family dentist. “He was intelligent, kind and helpful to the families he served. He had 6 people working for him and whistled all the time” which lead Lester to University of Texas, studying pre-dental.

When Lorms asked Lester about his educational influences, Lester noted a chemistry professor whose teaching technique he immolates now. “She explained her subject so clearly. She would say, “This is what we’re trying to do. This is where we’re trying to go. Do things efficiently, practically and quickly. Bringing my patients to the point of thinking in a very therapeutic way regarding their condition is important to me.”

Lester believes self knowledge is very important. While in school, he discovered his ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) tendencies. He learned that if he WALKED while studying, the information would stay with him. Sitting and studying just didn’t work for him. Lorms commented what a powerful discovery that was for Lester. “Others may have found their ADD a good excuse to quit school – but you found your own solution!”, said Lorms.

When Lester performed his pre-school volunteering, he realized, possibly due to the establishment of HMOs, that many of the dentists he observed were going through divorces, losing staff members and no one was happy. It was then an adversity placed him onto another tract and changed his life.

While at UT he swam, ran and competed in triathlons, but an automobile accident could have put an end to all that physical activity. He hadn’t realized how badly he was hurt at first, but by the third day he couldn’t move. The campus medical doctor gave him medication, but it wasn’t doing the job. He was immobile and in a great deal of pain. A friend took him to a chiropractor. The chiropractor was 65, looked 45, had 6 people working for him, was whistling and most important, spoke to him in language he could understand. He explained to Kenneth what the accident did to his body and why it was affecting him this way and that. “He took the science and a protocol to healing and educated me on what he was doing to help me get back to my active, healthy lifestyle.“ I saw that this was a healthy, happy environment. His practice was very positive and patient-centered. He read white papers and stayed on top of the latest scientific news about his field. It reflected my own idea of what I wanted to do with my career and my life. I wanted to do this!”

Lorms asked about the friction between the American Medical Association (AMA) and the practice of Chiropractic that had been prevalent for some time. Kenneth answered that in the past the AMA had black-listed chiropractic patients and did not accept referrals. “In fact, part of my education was paid for by the Supreme Court case, Wilk v. AMA [which found the AMA guilty of violating Section I of the Sherman Act and that it had engaged in an unlawful conspiracy in restraint of trade to contain and eliminate the chiropractic profession]. It is taught in medical schools now to look to chiropractic for a cost effective way to treat certain ailments dealing with restricted movement. Both Lester and Lorms mentioned their personal successes as chiropractic patients and how it helped them both return to normal function after illness or injury.

He graduated from UT and then Texas Chiropractic College and interned at a downtown Sports Chiropractic Center. After his internship he and a partner purchased a practice from a chiropractor who had an injury that made it impossible for her to continue practicing. With that in mind, Lester is careful of the stress he puts on his hands and arms in his non-practice daily life.

After he opened his business, “it was scary. I had a practice to build. The volunteer work I had done previously paid off with those patients coming to see me. I also grew my practice by networking: shaking hands and kissing babies!” He joined networking organizations and made sure he did his own personal business in his practice’s neighborhood and became a part of his community. Now most of his business comes from referrals. “

Later I purchased a building to continue my practice. “I was tired of throwing my money away with rent. As a small self-owned business, I don’t have a 401K with someone else matching the funds or a pension. I needed to invest financially in my future – and real estate is a good way to do just that.”
