The Green Apple Day of Service is an initiative from the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council. The event brings together advocates from around the world and encourages them to take action in their communities through service projects at local schools. Scheduled for the last Saturday in September 2014, projects will occur on or around September 27. The Day of Service, now in its third year, provides an opportunity for students, teachers, parents, elected officials, organizations, companies and more to transform all schools into healthy, safe, cost-efficient and productive learning places. Last year the USGBC NC helped coordinate 25 projects throughout the state. To date, 23 Green Apple Day projects are planned for 2014 and more will be added throughout September. Volunteers spend their time working on school campus beautification and clean- ups (using earth friendly green products), garden planting, setting up recycling programs and teaching environmental education through enrichment activities. “We have an active membership base of over 1,000 people in our North Carolina chapter of the US Green Building Council. Our membership is comprised of industry leaders in sustainability and green building as well as concerned citizens and community members interested in giving back. We want to get the message out that Where We Learn Matters. We support our state’s students, educators and administrators. What better way to demonstrate our support than by volunteering to help green our state’s school environments,” Many of today’s schools are beset by a host of challenges that impact lighting, indoor air quality and ventilation; For more information on the Green Apple Day of Service, visit mygreenapple.org. ### About the US Green Building Council, North Carolina Chapter The mission of USGBC NC is to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.
