INGATESTONE, U.K. - Sept. 8, 2014 - PRLog -- Sue Burton, founder of Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary is urgently appealing for financial help.  The appeal comes as Remus finances are stretched to the limit.

The Sanctuary now looks after over 200 animals, rescued from around the UK, providing respite care and rehabilitation for every one of them.  All of this comes at a high cost financially, in hay and Vets bills and, despite Remus’ best efforts, only meagre funds are coming in compared to the thousands of pounds of outgoings.

Sue says: “this year has been particularly tough, we’ve just seen no let-upon the demands placed upon us!  During the winter we dealt with the most appalling welfare cases and, at one point, I remember standing in Dartford with a dead emaciated horse behind meand a mare stuck up to her belly in mud in front of me, and about 50 horses all in very poor condition around me!  We paid for lorry loads of hay to keep them alive and we saw fields that were effectively burial grounds, scattered in carcasses and bones.  We worked tirelessly to help as many horses and ponies as we possibly could”.

In the Spring, the Sanctuary rescued Grace from Romford and Holly from Carmarthenshire - both were heavily pregnant, roaming loose on busy public roads for weeks and completely blind.  These beautiful horses have now gone on to have their foals.  Sadly, Grace was not able to feed her foal, Jess, who was quite poorly in the first week of her life, required bottle-feeding every 2 hours, and is still being bottle-fed.  Holly could feed her foal, Bracken, but she has also been very poorly and needed a lot of veterinary treatment, as she is very slightly brain damaged.  Another mare, Pippa, had her second cataract operation, and is now out in the fields enjoying her days.  The Sanctuary also took in 47 year old Orchid who had suffered the most horrendous cruelty and, when found had given up and was on the floor awaiting death.  Already in the 3 months that Orchid has been with the Sanctuary, she has put on 70kgs. You can read all of their stories on the Remus website.  Tony arrived mid-June via the RSPCA with the most awful injuries to his mouth and nose, causing it quite literally to hang off his face.  He’s making really good progress and can now eat and function normally.

Sue added, “our monthly medical bill is in excess of £3,000 to help keep all the older ponies pain free and healthy.  We know everyone’s in the same boat financially, but if there is any way you can help, perhaps by organising a fundraising event, coffee morning with friends, or recycling your used stamps and printer cartridges at work, we really would appreciate it!  However small, it all adds up and everyone can make a difference.”

Please send donations by cheque and post to Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary, Little Farm, Buttsbury Road, Near Ingatestone, Essex, CM4 9NZ or donate online and securely via PayPal or Just Giving via the Remus website at www.remussanctuary.org.
