This story follows the paths of three of the crew as they strive to uncover what became of their family, friends, and careers, and to rebuild their lives. The two preceding novels, Gliese 4 and New Nauru, were first published in 2006 and 2009, respectively. Gliese 4 told of the discovery of life on the fourth planet orbiting Gliese 876 and the problematic mounting of the first interstellar mission to visit it. New Nauru depicted mankind's first exploration of the planet and its surprising ecology until the crew is forced to leave by it alien master builders.
