A BIT OF TANGO HISTORY
Argentina and Uruguay have been exporting their talent to the world from the early 1900’s, making tango universally known in all continents. Prominent names in the tango arena such as Villoldo, Francisco Canaro, Carlos Gardel, Gerardo Matos and Astor Piazzola are widely known around the globe. People from all over the world and different cultures are attracted by the genre and thousands of Milongas - houses where tango is danced - exist in countries as distant as Russia, Japan, China, Australia, Turkey, Morocco, Germany, etc. In 2009, this deep-rooted tradition of dance and music from the Rio de la Plata basin was declared by the United Nations as part of the world's "intangible cultural heritage".
In the tradition of Tango Argentino, Sexteto Mayor, and other ensembles that have internationally toured and performed on Broadway, Tango Lovers Company envisions engaging different generations by presenting an broad-minded perspective of the art form, balancing the exquisite classical form with the glamour of show tango. Spanning the art form’s Golden Age to contemporary times, and inspired by the vortex of big cities and relationships among people, Tango Lovers Company, brings a masterful interpretation and display of avant-garde aesthetics to one of the most sensuous musical genres on the planet.
