South Passage Condominium Association Recognized for Environmental Stewardship

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Sept. 2, 2014 - PRLog -- Audubon International has awarded South Passage Condominium Association a Neighborhood for Nature Award in recognition of its outstanding efforts to foster environmental awareness and stewardship through the Audubon International Green Neighborhoods Program. Judith Honiss, the Green Neighborhoods Coordinator, is also recognized for her effort to plan for and promote environmental stewardship within the community.

The Audubon International Green Neighborhoods Program is designed to help a wide array of “residential neighborhoods” take stock of the natural environment around them, foster a sense of community through environmental projects and actions, and inspire better environmental practices on a community-wide basis. Members are required to build a Neighborhood Audubon Committee, conduct an environmental audit of their neighborhood community, and work with Audubon International staff to identify environmental education and improvement projects in the following areas: water quality & conservation, resource management, wildlife habitat protection and enhancement, community awareness, and outreach and education.

"Ultimately, we look to improve the environmental practices of neighborhood communities, educate residents, and reward actions, while at the same time make it fun for all who participate," explained Joanna Nadeau, associate director of environmental programs for Audubon International. "We welcome South Passage’s commitment to the environment and to managing the neighborhood with wildlife in mind."

By joining and participating in the Green Neighborhoods Program, South Passage is involved in projects that enhance habitat for wildlife and preserve natural resources for the benefit of the local community. These projects include: enhancing the property for native wildlife, placing towers for Ospreys, conserving water and energy, recycling waste, protecting water quality in the Indian River Lagoon, and driving green purchasing decisions. They join the Moorings Yacht and Country Club, a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary since 2002, in demonstrating their commitment to stewardship of the region’s precious natural resources.

"Audubon International programs benefit both people and wildlife," said Nadeau. "It's a great way for the managers of developed properties and environmental organizations to work together to become better stewards of land and natural resources.”
