New AJMLS Dean Welcomes Students to Campus by Taking the Ice Bucket Challenge

ATLANTA - Sept. 2, 2014 - PRLog -- Malcolm L. Morris, the new dean at Atlanta's John Marshall Law School (AJMLS), along with several other AJMLS faculty and staff members, recently participated in the Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) ice bucket challenge.

The event took place during the first week of class on Wednesday, August 20, at 8:40 am. AJMLS welcomed the opportunity to accept the challenge and also made a donation to the ALS Association of Georgia. This challenge has increased awareness about ALS nationwide, and the school’s participation spread a feeling of community among the students.

By inspiring his colleagues to participate in the group event, Dean Morris has embarked on fulfilling his vision to “seek innovative ways to strengthen our programs and better serve our students. We will do so with energy, imagination, and creativity.”

During the challenge, Dean Morris nominated the faculty and staff of AJMLS branch campus, Savannah Law School (SLS), along with the SLS community to take the challenge.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a terminal disease that causes damage to nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain. More than 12,000 people in the United States have been diagnosed with this disease. While there are several treatments aimed at improving the quality of life for ALS patients, a cure has not yet been discovered.

According to the ALS Association website, and largely due to the ice bucket challenge, the ALS Association received $100.9 million in donations from July 29 to Aug 29 compared to $2.8 million during the same time period last year. These donations have come from over 3 million new and existing donors to The Association.

Rebecca Milter, ice bucket participant and Director of Admissions, says, “as we begin a new academic year, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a great way for the Law School community to further the public's awareness of ALS, raise funding to help support the ALS Association's mission and welcome our new and returning students to campus. We are proud to be a part of this great cause.”

Just before dousing himself in water, Dean Morris pronounced “we’re ready” which appropriately rings true to both the challenge and the academic year ahead. You may access the video footage of the event on the school's YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgvpQ9VhG40) profile.
