SOMERVILLE, Mass. - Aug. 29, 2014 - PRLog -- The Learning Circle Childcare, LLC in Somerville, Massachusetts is a unique, fun learning center.  It was founded over 18 years ago by its director, Julie Vellucci-Melo.  Julie holds an MA from Tufts University in Child Development focusing on Clinical Developmental Psychology and a BA in Psychology from Harvard University Extension School minoring in Early Childhood Development, graduating cum laude.  Both her education and experience allow her to effectively operate The Learning Circle in Somerville, most importantly meeting the children’s, families’, and teachers’ needs.
The philosophy of The Learning Circle Childcare LLC is to provide a loving, anti-bias, supportive, safe, healthy, enjoyable, educational, multicultural, and developmentally/individually appropriate environment all custom designed with a friendly focus.  The objectives of The Learning Circle are to provide each child with a stimulating, natural environment for his or her to develop in the growth areas including cognitive, social, physical, and emotional realm at the most optimum level.  The Learning Circle helps each child develop a positive self-image in order to have a foundation for growing up confidently, as well as promote an insatiable eagerness for learning and become an active self-directed learner.  From taking turns to caring for others to sharing, pro-social behavior is taught and promoted.  The Learning Circle also focuses on developing cognitive skills, in addition to concept development and problem solving.  In addition, children are encouraged to use expressive/receptive language to develop their vocabulary and communication skills.  Through functioning in large groups and sharing, collaborative play is encouraged while social skills continually develop.  The Learning Circle also promotes optimum physical development as well as fine/gross motor development.  In addition, they encourage the development of creativity and imagination.  Furthermore, The Learning Circle promotes giving respect and having empathy for others through an appreciation for diversity in gender, culture, race, and ethnicity.  To foster health and independence, skills on self-help are taught.  The goal is for every child to gain the confidence to achieve their individual potential.
Unlike traditional learning centers, The Learning Circle encourages children to make choices from reading, art-educational and creative/sensory, blocks, dramatic, a writing/listening center, manipulates, music/dancing, math/science, or large/small motor.  The activities are balanced between child directed and teacher directed activities, quieter and louder play, and active/relaxed activities.   Some of the examples of dramatic play include playing with animal puppets, and playing house, as well as art play with drawing, usage of manipulates such as with counting on an abacus, and also stringing beads onto yarn.  There is also the development of the fine/gross motor area through playing with building blocks and toy trucks.  There is also a quiet area for reading, as well as nap time and yoga time.
The staff at The Learning Circle work together to create a safe environment full of support.  There is always ongoing, positive collaboration with families.
