CHP power stations are between 70-90% efficient

2013 study by engineers found that combined heat and power stations are 20-60% more efficient than standard power plants because they supply electricity and provide heat.

A CHP station (http://www.renewableplanet.co.uk/#!combined-heat-and-power-chp/c50i) releases heat during the capturing of the generated electricity which is then used to heat homes and offices. CHP power stations are between 70-90% efficient.

Britain has spend the past four decades developing its gas grids. The government is working towards increasing the number of households connected to district heating networks. The aim is to connect 18%+ more properties by 2030 and by 2050, a further 20%+ by 2050. At present, there are just under 200,000 properties connect nationwide.

More than 50 local authorities have started implementing the government's proposal. Between them, they have been awarded £4m with £3m remaining in the budget.

London has already proposed to regenerate several areas and connect homes to district heating. Kings Cross Station will see 2,000 new homes built, 10,000 on the site of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. In addition, another scheme in Pimlico is already up and running, supplying heat to 3,000 homes.

Furthermore, Bristol, Leicester, Nottingham and Sheffield are also investing in district heating.

District heating schemes are set in place to reduce fuel imports, lower carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty.
