Paul was born in Schenectady, New York, but spent his earliest years in Montego Bay, Jamaica. At age 5, he relocated to New Jersey, where he grew up. His high school experience represents a significant influence on his style as a business leader. The environment was highly diverse, which lent to Paul’s appreciation for unique and heterogeneous teams.
He continued to prepare for his career in business leadership during his tenure at Cornell University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in applied economics and business management. Paul also enjoyed sports, particularly basketball and soccer.
He reports, “Athletics taught me about leadership; how to make quick decisions, how to build team morale, and how to foster chemistry. The biggest thing I’ve learned is the power of self-talk – how to speak positive about what I’m doing and striving for.”
At the start of his career, Paul was interested in an industry with opportunity for upward mobility and the ability to have fun at work each day. Now, his goal is to be promoted to regional consultant in the next year. Further, in the next five years, he hopes to own a division within the business and to launch a real estate company as well. His wife of 10 years, Sonia, is one of his biggest supporters.
As the director of Inc. 2000, Paul has sharpened his ability to motivate people. He says he does this by understanding what their goals are and how to help them create strategic plans for attaining them. This is what he had to do to advance his own career.
Paul states, “I use my past experience in the business to mentor new manager trainees to help them reach their goals, which in turn helps the company and me reach our goals.” He also identifies having a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn as necessary to business success.
Paul embraces a motto that offers inspiration and guidance. He believes that success is not to be pursued. It is attracted by the person you become.
Inc. 2000 Recognizes the Connection Between Leadership and Learning
According to Paul, the team at Inc. 2000 maintains strong leadership skills via continuous learning. Leadership is not something that is learned once. It requires constant education to stay abreast of changing industry trends, technological advancements, and business tactics.
Paul explains that to remain open to the learning process, it is necessary to understand personal strengths and weaknesses. This knowledge informs individuals about how to prioritize available learning opportunities. It is essential to explore educational options as well, including online and social media courses.
Paul readily expresses why he finds the business amazing. “The coolest thing about becoming a director at Inc. 2000 is that the company invested 100% into me. I am now able to provide for my family to live a fruitful, fun, and abundant life. The great news is that my team members have the same opportunities as I do because we’re always looking for the next superstar to help us expand.”
The right combination of education and passion drives success. To perpetuate this mix, it is vital to teach others about the benefits of learning and how they contribute to excellent leadership. Doing so has enabled Paul to promote a dozen people in the past two years. He indicates, “This has allowed them to have the same unique and awesome opportunities as I have had.”
