DETROIT - Aug. 28, 2014 - PRLog -- N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art in Midtown will launch an atelier in the fall to teach the skills needed to run an art gallery to students who are 17 and older.

“We’re doing our part to help nurture Detroit’s creative class,” said George N’Namdi, founder of the N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art. "And no other similar program exists for would-be gallerists in our region."

Registration is open now through Sept. 19, 2014, for the fee-based certificate program that focuses on the business of art.

The aim of the new atelier, staffed by veteran artists, art educators, museum curators and gallery owners, is to help grow Detroit’s nascent creative community and develop skilled arts entrepreneurs with a special emphasis on people from diverse backgrounds.

Made possible by grants from the Knight Foundation, The Kresge Foundation and Erb Family Foundation, the atelier will offer three core classes, beginning Sept. 22, taught by gallerists George N'Namdi and Monica Bowman, and art installation experts.

Three-hour classes, covering art appreciation, art entrepreneurship, art tracking and handling, installation management and consignment contract negotiation, run for 10 weeks and cost $175 to $200 each. Financial aid is available for qualifying students.

Class size is limited to 12 for a total of 36 students each semester to ensure individualized instruction for this intensive program, which also features seminars led by guest speakers from the Detroit Institute of Arts with expertise in African-American and African art, European traditional masterworks, photography, and contemporary art.

“We also want to ensure artists and gallerists can make a living while doing what they love,” said N’Namdi.
