Amity Insurance advises monthy smoke alarm tests for safety's sake

QUINCY, Mass. - Aug. 28, 2014 - PRLog -- The increase in the use of smoke detectors in homes has significantly reduced the number of deaths and injuries resulting from fires, but it is crucial to ensure that they are tested frequently, according to Amity Insurance Agency, Inc., the region's leading full service agency.

Like any other device, smoke alarms can fail over time.  A monthly check, incorporating the following steps, will serve as good insurance that they are working properly:

Make everyone in the household aware that testing will occur and alarms will sound.  For smoke detectors that have a hardwired connection to a security system, make sure to contact the security company before conducting the test to let them know it’s not a real emergency.

Test the loudness of the smoke alarm by having someone go to the furthest location in the house away from the alarm.  Keep in mind that while its best to have a smoke alarm in every room, it is important that they can be heard in other rooms, as well.  To test the sound, press the test button and hold it down for several seconds.  If there is no beep and the alarm runs on batteries, replace the batteries and then conduct the test.  Smoke alarms that fail to work with new batteries will likely need to be replaced.

Test the detection capabilities by purchasing a can of smoke detector test aerosol, which can be found in home improvement and hardware stores.  Spray a small amount into the detector then wait for five to ten seconds.  If all is working properly, the alarm should shut off on its own after sounding.  If there is no response, take a look at the opening to see if there is dust or other debris clogging it. Try replacing the batteries if eliminating the clog doesn’t do the trick.  If still no response, the alarm probably needs to be replaced.

Smoke alarms, batteries and test aerosol are inexpensive and well worth the investment to protect the lives of everyone in the house.  To learn more about fires, safety and insurance, discuss concerns with an agent.
