By: Cumbria Tourism The enchanting competition – which involves the biggest and strongest males in the herd trying to round up the females (hinds) for mating – results in a bellowing echo around the fells as dominance is fought for. With stunning mountain scenery and gushing waterfalls, the Eden Valley is a wonderful place to be as the autumn colours shine through, and what better excuse to visit than to see one of nature’s amazing sights? And the award-winning Ullswater Steamers will be offering a unique opportunity to see the rut with their Red Deer Rut Cruises between October 9th and 12th. The popular events, led by RSPB guides, depart at Glenridding for a calming cruise along the waters of the lake, before stopping at Howtown where a short bus ride to Martindale and a ten-minute walk will follow. Good quality viewing equipment is even on hand thanks to the RSPB, so you are sure to get a glimpse of this natural wonder on you reach the conservation area.
