"Between the Lines" focuses in on Serra football

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Aug. 27, 2014 - PRLog -- The Serra High football team — one of the most successful and prestigious programs in the Central Coast Section — has been selected by Prep2Prep to star in a documentary series called "Between The Lines".

Prep2Prep is a media organization headquartered in San Jose, California dedicated to the coverage of high school sports.

"'Between The Lines' shows the real grind of high school football for the players and coaches that gets overlooked in most "Hollywood" movies,” said Serra assistant coach Chris Vasseur. “And (Between The Lines) is the meat and bones of what makes this sport so great and teaches the important lessons."

"Between The Lines" was inspired by the HBO series "Hard Knocks", which is a reality series that follows a selected NFL team through its training camp as the team prepares for the upcoming season.

Prep2Prep will do the same but on the high school level with Serra.

Most of Prep2Prep’s content is generated by high school students, who receive mentoring and training from a staff of professional journalists.

The Padres are fresh off capturing their first Central Coast Section Open Division last year. This year they are looking to claim sole possession of the West Catholic Athletic League title after splitting it with Mitty last year. The Padres went on to defeat the Monarchs, 21-7, in the Open Division title game.

The all boys’ Catholic school located in San Mateo, Calif. has a pretty rich list of famous alums including current New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who graduated in 1995. Other famous alums include former Major League Baseball player and all-time home run leader Barry Bonds (class of 1982), NFL Hall of Famer Lynn Swann (class of 1970), who played eight seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning four Super Bowls.

Bill Keller, a Pulitzer Prize winner who is also an executive editor for the New York Times, graduated in 1966 and Bob Fitzgerald, who is the current play-by-play announcer for the Golden State Warriors who graduated in 1984, are among many others who went on to great success after their time at Serra.

“We have a really good relationship with them and it’s a great institution,” said Prep2Prep President Danny Kadah of Serra. “Serra was a real natural fit; they are a well respected school and an athletic powerhouse.”

Since the WCAL first formed in 1967 the Padres football team has won six WCAL titles and three CCS titles, including two in the past three years.

"Between The Lines" will differ from "Hard Knocks" namely because this will be a show primarily about kids and not the grown men of the NFL.

“The challenge is boys will be boys,” Kadah said. “It will have a challenging setting as Serra will be a team dealing with player eligibility and abiding by league rules. It will be a great documentation of what a high caliber football team goes through.”

Along with playing in what is hands down the toughest and most competitive league in the entire CCS, Serra under the guidance of 14th year head coach Patrick Walsh, will yet again have a very challenging non-league slate.

This year Serra will open up with a pair of road games that would make any team cringe.

The Padres will start their season on Sept. 5 against national powerhouse De La Salle of Concord. The Spartans are currently ranked No. 5 in the entire state according to calpreps.com.

The following week Serra will make a six-plus hour trek south to SoCal for a date with Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks.

Serra will then wrap up its non-league slate with a home game against local rival South San Francisco before getting a much-needed bye week before beginning WCAL play on the road against Valley Christian on Oct. 3.

"Between The Lines" will begin airing on August 28 atprep2prep.com/tv.

"I'm excited that Serra was selected to be a part of this program,” Vasseur said. “The school has a rich athletic tradition with some household names and I hope that people will be enticed to watch the program the see the same lessons that were taught to these stars, to today's players."
