SYDNEY - Aug. 27, 2014 - PRLog -- Recounted in a free flowing narrative style, Irishman John Smyth recollects his true life story about growing up in Northern Ireland, including his time in the Merchant Navy, and his life in Australia, China and the Philippines.

Smyth became a ‘five pound Pom’ (someone who paid 5 English pounds to emigrate by ship) and moved to Australia, ending up working for two years at the Mt Isa mine in the outback.

After moving back to Ireland, Smyth describes what life is like living under constant terrorist threat.  After joining the Royal Ulster Constabulary as a reservist he uncovers a high tech terrorist bomb-making cell and is soon declared the No. 1 person on the IRA hit list after surviving an IRA bomb attack.

Smyth escapes back to Australia with his new family where he builds up an engineering company. A few years later on a chance trip to China, Smyth finds success by building business links with the communist government, bringing the first bilateral trade delegation to Australia.

This book is as exciting as any spy novel you may have already read — the difference is that this story is true.

ASIO (after a two year battle) capitulated at the Australian Appeals Tribunal, granting permission for their part in this story to be told — you can read more on the website and follow the links below.

Any reader of Smyth’s book will discover a fascinating account of doing business with Chinese society just as it was opening to the west.

Eventually caught up in a web involving ASIO, M-16 and the CIA, Smyth leaves China just before he declared persona non grata and sets up again in Manila.

Within several years he had built a thriving business again, but would lose everything in a battle with corrupt businessmen and army hit men.  His exploits in the Philippines make great reading as he took on the highest levels of the army and justice system seeking retribution.

On return to Australia, he set up a laboratory on his bush property and spent the next ten years researching thermal energy.  Eventually this would culminate in patents being registered all around the world for a unique diodic thermal membrane.

There is an old saying: ‘truth is stranger than fiction’, and in this case, the story of John Smyth’s life has plenty of twists and turns involving terrorists, governments and intrigue in several countries from M-16 in Hong Kong to the CIA in China and ASIO in Australia.
